7/7/08 - Suburban Winner Ices Competition

Frost Giant (Giant's Causeway) shocked the crowd and seven other handicap horses at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 28, with a very game victory in the $400,000 Suburban Handicap (G1). Winning his first Grade 1, Frost Giant completed the 1 1/4-mile test in 2:01 2/5 over the fast oval.

Frost Giant, who was on or near the lead throughout race, was shadowed most of the event by Solar Flare (Salt Lake). Coming around the turn and into the stretch, Frost Giant was headed by Solar Flare and appeared to be running for second-place money. Battling back on the inside, though, the five-year-old horse dug down deep to regain the lead and then crossed the wire one-half length ahead of Solar Flare.

Frost Giant is the first foal produced from the mare Takesmybreathaway (Gone West), who herself is daughter of the Seattle Slew mare Oscillate. Oscillate is a half-sister to champion Rhythm (Mr. Prospector) and the dam of Kentucky stallion Mutakddim (Seeking the Gold). Oscillate is also closely related to graded stakes winners Daydreaming and Accelerator. Grade 1 winner Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) descends from the same female family, making him a close relative to Frost Giant.

The Slew Crew congratulates Frost Giant, owner IEAH Stables, Andrew Cohen, and Pegasus Holding Group Stables, breeder J.M.J. Stables Corporation, trainer Rick Dutrow, jockey Rudy Rodriguez and all of Frost Giant's connections.
