Slew Crew Congratulates Belmont Stakes Winner Arcangelo
Coming off a win in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) over the same track on May 13, lightly raced ARCANGELO (Arrogate) proved up to the test of champions and showed his class by winning the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) by 1 1/2 lengths over last year's two-year-old champion Forte (Violence).
Arcangelo, who is out of the Tapit mare Modeling, and Forte, whose third dam is Seattle Slew's daughter Kew Garden, lead a parade of three more descendants of Slew across the line: Tapit Trice (Tapit) in third and Hit Show (Candy Ride [Arg]) and Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) who finished in a dead heat for fourth. Hit Show is out of a Tapit mare while Angel of Empire boasts Slew twice on his dam's side.
Arcangelo, who raced tucked in behind the pacesetter along with others, made an impressive move along the rail to take the lead and then draw clear down the stretch. As he closed in on the wire, the others gained ground but Arcangelo was not about to lose his chance at making history for himself or his connections. Aracangelo won the final leg of the Triple Crown in a time of 2:29 1/5 over a fast Belmont Park oval. It was the first Belmont win for his jockey, Javier Castellano, and his trainer, Jena Antonucci, who became the first female trainer to win an American classic.
Foaled in Kentucky, Arcangelo was bred by Don Alberto Corporation. Seattle Slew is buried at the farm near Lexington now owned by Don Alberto Corporation.
With three wins and a second from five starts, Arcangelo has now earned more than $1 million and attracted a growing legion of fans for himself and his connections.
The Slew Crew congratulations Arcangelo, Don Alberto Corporation, Jena Antonucci and her team, Javier Castellano and owner Blue Rose Farm on this fantastic victory. Best wishes for continued success.
