3/31/14 - Skyring Wires Muniz Foes

Breaking sharply from the outside of his four competitors, five-year-old SKYRING (English Channel) took the lead quickly and never relinquished control in the $300,000 Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Handicap (G2) on March 29 at Fair Grounds. The bay horse was under a firm hold early to lead through splits of :25, :50 3/5 and 1:15 while shadowed by a longshot before shaking clear for a 2 1/2-length advantage through a mile in 1:39 2/5. Kept to task under strong urging, the grandson of Seattle Slew held off the strong late rally of the runner-up to cross under the finish line a neck in front. He completed 1 1/8 miles over the soft turf course in a time of 1:52.

6/30/13 - Slow Pace Captures La Coupe

Five-year-old SLOW PACE (Distorted Humor) did exactly as his name implied, setting a pedestrian pace before quickening with two furlongs to go and then holding off his competition to win the La Coupe (Fr-G3) June 10 at Longchamp by a neck. The bay gelding completed 1 1/4 miles in 2:09 1/5 over a good to soft course.

Slow Pace, who raced stateside last year, has now won four of 14 starts. He was bred in Kentucky and was produced from Seattle Slew's daughter Slow Down, who became Seattle Slew's 100th stakes winner when she captured the 2001 Hillsborough Handicap. Five-year-old TALE OF A CHAMPION (Tale of the Cat) turned a perfect trip into his first graded stakes score June 8 when he won the $200,000 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap (G2) by a length over five others.

The bay horse broke cleanly and quickly settled in on the rail, just behind the pacesetter and his shadow. Sticking to his inside trip, Tale of a Champion kept pace with the leader down the backstretch and into the far turn. Ready to make his move, Tale of a Champion split horses coming out of the final turn and took the lead. The winner was kept busy down the stretch as he held off a late closer and was ... [more]

5/18/13 - Skyring Wins Dixie Stakes; Stablemate Optimizer Third

Four-year-old SKYRING (English Channel) hadn't tasted victory in a year but that wasn't going to hold him back in the $300,000 Dixie Stakes (G2), run an hour before the May 18 Preakness Stakes (G1) where the same connections would find success.

Facing off against 10 competitors, Skyring broke well from the number eight hole and quickly moved forward to take the lead. The bay colt worked his way over to the rail and set a comfortable pace while his stablemate, Optimizer (English Channel), tracked him in third. Racing through marks of :24 2/5, :48 1/5 and 1:11 4/5, Skyring had opened up a nice advantage by the time ... [more]
